A large modern extension to a traditional detached house in Highgate, with light refurbishment of the existing property.
The brief was to knock down and rebuild an existing extension to form a larger kitchen/living area whilst increasing the natural light into the space. Various dramatic glazing concept schemes were explored but the client gravitated to a design that was both modern in its form and detail but also understated, blending into the existing building.
We adopted a cantilevered steel frame design to allow a seamless open corner to benefit from the unusually large secluded garden. Taking the glazing above the ceiling again maximised the view onto the garden and, with a large rooflight, helped draw light back into the darkest part of the room.
